Can Turkey Stay Strong in Textiles While Building Chips?
Sector balance is key to sustainable growth. Like China, a country can support traditional strengths (textiles, footwear) while investing in high technology — but neglecting existing strengths is risky for Turkey.
1. Does chip production employ millions?
No. Chip fabs need automation and relatively few highly skilled engineers. TSMC, Intel and Samsung employ tens of thousands, not millions. The value is strategic, not mass employment.
2. One sector must not be sacrificed for another
China never abandoned textiles while investing in chips; it still leads global textile exports. Turkey ranks among the top five textile exporters but faces rising energy costs and import pressure.
3. Textile's hidden contribution
Suitcase trade, construction and tourism links, and hundreds of supplier industries depend on textiles.
4. Chain reaction
When textiles slow, exports, regional economies (Denizli, Bursa, Gaziantep) and consumption all suffer.
Conclusion
Turkey can strengthen both textiles and high tech, but chips will never match textile employment. Protecting textiles while developing technology is the rational path.
